“Straight people should have to come out too. The more awkward it is the better.”
-Simon
A sixteen-year-old Simon, concealing his homosexuality, is being blackmailed by his classmate, Martin. Martin lays hands on the mails that Simon accidentally leaves open on his school computer, to threaten him into being his wing-man unless he wanted his sexual identity to come into spotlight, which Simon wasn’t ready for as of yet.
But worst of all, Simon doesn’t want to shatter his relationship with his pen pal, Blue who is also a not-so-openly gay.Its an entire journey with ups and downs between Simon and his closely encircled group of friends, through his coming out about his sexual identity to his family and friends being so supportive of his revelation and bravery that is nudged by none other than Blue.
So, this was my first LGBT genre book and I utterly loved how it subtly talks about a teenager trying find himself, what he wants and gathering up the courage required to come out about his identity to the universe that he thinks has fixated his image as a certain someone unlikely to change any further. Fortunately, with this coming out age where the community is gradually becoming open minded and welcoming towards every kind of person irrespective of their caste, creed, sexuality etc, for Simon it became tad bit easier with his parents, friends and his teachers accepting him easily for his true being. Although, he also has his rough share with the blackmailing and balancing between his friends and their own petty little bickering. But above all its blue who tells him that each one around him has his own share of secrets and there is nothing to be afraid of and made him more confident about himself.
It’s very adorable and dreamy how flirtatious the relationship between Simon and Blue grows and how they fall in love without knowing each other’s true identity with a happy ending and piquing your excitement for the journey of their relationship at the same time.
This book, hands down, is the one you don’t want to miss and is a pure charm to all the readers out there.
