AND THEN THERE WERE NONE
AUTHOR – AGATHA CHRISTIE
GENRE – CRIME, MYSTERY, PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER
PAGES – 317
PUBLICATION – HARPER COLLINS
PUBLISHED – NOVEMBER 6, 1939
Agatha Christie, irrefutably known as the queen of mystery gives us yet another engaging novel. It begins with an assortment of 10 people, who are summoned by an unknown millionaire as guests to a Soldier Island off the coast of England. The only common thing the guests have, is their sinister past. Atrociously proceeding with the plot, there is no good guy in the book, just 10 people guilty and remorseful for their dreadful acts in the past. Now they are all stranded on an island far off, curled up in their beds of their rooms where hangs a photo frame of a spooky nursery rhyme that recites their death.
This is the first Agatha Christie book I read and with the potpourri of spookiness, heinous crimes, unthinkable outcomes and so much more, it uniquely stands out fulfilling all the standard requisites of a crime and mystery in an impressively small book considering the delight it offers. As the suspense builds up and soon enough that we are able to connect the dots, it deceives us into believing that we, as remotely possible be it, might be able to recognize the real killer before the big revelation, just to realize that we had fallen into the trap since the very first page of the book.
Howsoever, in my view, few parts of the story were a little predictable (maybe it was made to be predictable to hoodwink us into thinking in a certain way) with quite a grimly upturning plot.
I found the thread characterizing those of somber and glum personas where the entire story-line is motivated by a psychological hunger to make the delinquents pay for what they did years ago but were excused of the retributions they deserved.
Be the book as saddening or gloomy, it was a fun and worthy read with hair rising suspense and a plot equally debatable at the same time.
Although the real question is…
If there were only 10 people on the island and all of them died one after the other leaving none, who was the killer?
Rating :- ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Probably my favorite Agatha Christie book!
